Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO
LaDainian Tomlinson surpassed the late Hall of Famer Walter Payton for third on the all-time career rushing touchdown list with two scores against the Chiefs. Tomlinson now has 123 career touchdowns, tied for ninth with Marvin Harrison.
The announced attendance of 74,874 was the smallest at Arrowhead Stadium in almost six years. ... Cromartie, who came into the game leading the NFL with six interceptions, got his seventh when he picked off Huard in the end zone in the first half. ... Aided by the swirling, gusting winds, Kansas City's Dustin Colquitt kicked a team-record 81-yard punt into the end zone in the fourth quarter.
The Chargers took a page from ex-defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' book as they completely dismantled the Chiefs' offense. For the first time all season, the San Diego linebacker unit was unleashed, and it responded by producing eight sacks. Rarely this season have we seen the Chargers bring both OLB Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips at the same time, but both came on the same play numerous times against the Chiefs. Pressure came from everywhere. There was more stunting up front from the defensive line, and defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell brought his ILBs and even a few corner blitzes. The Chiefs obviously were not prepared for what they saw from the San Diego defense -- and how could they have been? Based on the tape, the Chargers have not been playing with this type of aggression, but this is what we thought we would see from San Diego all season. Now that the Chargers have found their blitz package, they have a chance to keep opposing offenses off balance. It was a clear recipe for success, and the Chargers now have a firm grasp on the AFC West. We finally saw the "real" San Diego Chargers.
