Panthers coach Ron Rivera likes what he's seen from quarterback Cam Newton in the first two practices. "He's had his moments,"" Rivera said. "A couple of times he tried to force a couple of balls down field when I'd rather see him throw the check down. But he sees something . . . and he's got a lot of confidence in his guys right now. He is throwing the ball well.'' Rivera also likes Newton's straw hat. "I'm a little envious," Rivera said. "I wish I had one that for me. He looks good, though. He really does."

Linebacker Su'A Cravens made a highlight play Friday with a leaping interception. He said he didn't have to do much. But what he did well: get to the right spot. Cravens did so with a correct read of the back. Quarterback Colt McCoy couldn't get the ball over Cravens' head.

Redskins tight end Jordan Reed stayed after practice to catch more passes off the jugs machine. Reed caught 25 passes off the machine, turning and catching them from about 10 feet away. He takes at least 10 turning to each side. In practice he displayed great hands by reaching back to the middle and securing a pass. It was an athletic catch not many tight ends could make.
