New Saints WR Hakeem Nicks admitted that he was texting Sean Payton every week since his spring visit. Nicks said he's had to fight injuries in his career, including last year with Titans. But he said that just adds to the chip in his shoulder. Also said he's taken time to try and "learn the business," study offenses and try to figure out why he had most of his success early in his career with Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

Darius Slay is the first major extension for the Lions under Bob Quinn. He made some free agent deals and picked up Ezekiel Ansah's option, but this was a big move for him. It was a high organizational priority and he got it done.

Packers first-year running backs coach Ben Sirmans said he's noticed Eddie Lacy's acceleration so far in training camp. He mentioned two runs and a screen pass where he's seen it already. "He's utilized his quick feet and burst through the hole," Sirmans said. "Everything I remember back when I was looking at him coming out, I was able to see those things."

Of course, the biggest criticism about the coach his past 13 seasons is his 0-7 playoff record. But he also is Cincinnati's winningest coach (112).

Chargers announce they have signed offensive lineman Marcel Jones and waived center Trevor Robinson, who started 13 games for San Diego last season. Robinson had been dealing with a shoulder issue and did not practice during offseason work for the Chargers.
