SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- If you see San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh stomping along the sideline in cleats, don't fret.

The former NFL quarterback is not trying to relive past glory days. He's simply giving in to superstition, something he has tried to avoid in the past.

As Harbaugh said Monday, "there are no finer hours" than after a victory, so you've got to do what you've got to do.

San Francisco is 4-0 when its quirky coach has donned cleats on the sideline.

Harbaugh said he first wore the cleats in London when the 49ers beat Jacksonville. It came a week after he tried to break up a scrum between his players and Titans players in Nashville. He joked he had no traction and didn't want to be caught in that situation again.

Yet, after the Jacksonville game, he went away from cleats when the 49ers played Carolina at home and then at New Orleans. The 49ers lost both games. So the cleats went back on.

"We've won every time I've worn the cleats," Harbaugh said Monday, the day after the 49ers' biggest win of the season, a 19-17 thriller at home over NFC West rival Seattle. "There was a time I was superstitious about not being superstitious. Now I'm suddenly superstitious a little bit."
