GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Andrew Quarless finished last season as the Green Bay Packers' starting tight end. If they don't re-sign Jermichael Finley, Quarless could take over that role on a full-time basis.

The Packers re-signed Quarless on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Quarless was an unrestricted free agent who, according to agent Chris Cabot, drew interest from seven other teams after the negotiating window opened last Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Quarless is coming off the best season of his four-year career. He returned from a knee injury that kept him out for the 2012 season and posted career highs in receptions (32), yards (312) and touchdown catches (two). He appeared in every game and became the starter after Finley sustained a season-ending neck injury Oct. 20 against the Cleveland Browns.

Quarless' best games came in consecutive weeks late in the season, against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14 and the Dallas Cowboys in Week 15. In each game, the former fifth-round pick from Penn State posted identical numbers: six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The Packers believe what Quarless showed late in the season could be an indication of his potential.

"I think he's got more in the tank, and we talked about that throughout the season," tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot said shortly after the season. "I think that he's made strides in being a better receiver and understanding where he needs to be on the field at any given point. As with anything, you always work on consistency."

The Packers may still explore other options at tight end. They had former Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels for a visit on Wednesday. Daniels is expected to visit the Washington Redskins next, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan.

They also could be waiting to see if Finley will be cleared following neck fusion surgery last November. Finley visited the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday and underwent a medical evaluation but remained unsigned.

Quarless is the third unrestricted free agent to re-sign with the Packers this week. Cornerback Sam Shields signed a four-year, $39 million contract Saturday, and outside linebacker/defensive end Mike Neal signed a two-year, $8 million deal Wednesday.
