EARTH CITY, Mo. -- St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey has been suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The team sent out a statement from a league representative Monday afternoon confirming the suspension. Bailey will be eligible to return to the field after the team's game against Philadelphia on Oct. 5.

In the meantime, Bailey can continue to participate in all parts of the team's offseason program as well as preseason practices and games.

Bailey took to Twitter after the announcement of his ban.

A third-round draft choice out of West Virginia in 2013, Bailey didn't play much early as a rookie but got more opportunities near the end of the season. He finished with 17 catches for 226 yards and had a rushing touchdown.

Bailey's improvement toward the end of the season had the Rams poised to give him an increased role in the offense this season.

The Rams did not use any of their 11 draft picks on a wide receiver.
