NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans have released Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle among 15 players cut as the franchise starts trimming the roster before Saturday's NFL deadline.

The safety from Florida State studied at Oxford before returning in 2010 to test his football career, and the Titans drafted him with the final pick of the sixth round. He spent the season on the practice squad.

They also released linebacker Rennie Curran, a third-round draft pick in 2010 who did not fit in on a new bigger defense.

Others released are RBs Stafon Johnson, Herb Donaldson and Kestahn Moore, OT Pat McQuistan, DEs Hall Davis and Julian Hartsell, FB Joe Tronzo, TEs Riar Greer, Cameron Graham, CB Lequan Lewis, WRs Michael Preston and James Kirkendoll and OL Thomas Gray.

Steelers officially put QB Leftwich on IR

The Steelers placed quarterback Byron Leftwich on injured reserve and released 21 others.

Leftwich suffered a broken arm in the Steelers' third preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons a week ago.

The players released include linebackers Baraka Atkins, Mario Harvey, Chris McCoy and Mortty Ivy, defensive lineman Corbin Bryant, defensive backs Brett Greenwood, Macho Harris, Donovan Warren and Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith.

Also, running backs James Johnson and John Clay, offensive linemen Colin Miller, Kyle Jolly, John Malecki, Trevis Turner and Keith Williams, wide receivers Armand Robinson, Wes Lyons and Tyler Grisham, tight end Jamie McCoy and kicker Swayze Waters were waived.

Giants place LB Sintim on IR, waive 4 others

A day after suffering a major knee injury in the preseason finale, linebacker Clint Sintim has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants.

New York also waived cornerback Darnell Burks, receiver Todd Watkins, guard Brant Clouser and defensive tackle Ibrahim Abdulai in reaching the 80-man limit.

The NFL gave the Giants and Jets a couple of extra days to reach the limit because Hurricane Irene delayed their game until Monday night, forcing the teams to play twice in three days.

The Giants must cut another 27 players to reach the 53-man limit by Saturday evening.

Sintim, a third-year pro, tore the anterior cruciate ligament and patellar tendon in his right knee early in the second half against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

Burks, Clouser and Abdulai are rookies. Watkins is a third-year pro.

Falcons include DE Davis among 17 cuts

The Atlanta Falcons have included three veteran defensive players -- end Chauncey Davis, tackle Trey Lewis and linebacker Coy Wire -- among 17 roster cuts.

Friday's cuts came one day after the Falcons completed with 0-4 preseason with a 21-7 loss to Baltimore.

Davis, a fourth-round pick in 2005, made 25 starts in six seasons with Atlanta. He made two starts in 2010, when he had 19 tackles, one sack and one interception.

Lewis, a sixth-round pick in 2007, had seven starts in only 18 games in three seasons.

Wire, who was the team's player rep, spent the first six years of his career with Buffalo and played in 15 games as a backup last season.

Cardinals cut punter Graham, 24 others

The Arizona Cardinals have released Ben Graham, the team's punter the past two seasons, and 24 others to get down to the NFL's 53-man roster limit.

Graham's release means the punting chores will go to veteran Dave Zastudil.

Among the others cut are cornerback Fred Bennett, center Ben Claxton, running back William Powell, safety Matt Ware, fullback Reagan Maui'a and wide receiver Isaiah Williams.

The coaching staff chose to keep five tight ends and nine linebackers.

LB Brown among eight cut by Patriots

The New England Patriots have released veteran linebacker Ricky Brown and seven other players.

The moves Friday came a day before NFL teams must reduce their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53.

The Patriots also released offensive linemen Jonathan Compas, Mike Berry and Corey Woods, tight end Carson Butler, wide receiver Buddy Farnham, running back Richard Medlin and defensive lineman Darryl Richard.

Brown spent the past five seasons with the Oakland Raiders as a backup linebacker and special teams player. In 55 games, he made 13 starts. The Patriots signed him on Aug. 20.

Richard, a seventh-round draft choice in 2009, was on injured reserve all last season. Berry, Medlin and Woods were rookie free agents.
