NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans placed receiver Kenny Britt on injured reserve Wednesday and signed Donnie Avery to fill his spot on the roster.

Britt tore both his ACL and MCL in his right knee during last week's 17-14 win over Denver. He will need surgery within the next two weeks to repair the damage, but the injury left Tennessee (2-1) with only four receivers. The Titans worked out a handful of receivers Tuesday and Wednesday before signing Avery.

"We played against him in preseason, he played well against us that day, we know he is coming off the ACL and missed last year," Titans coach Mike Munchak. "He has played in the league, has 100 catches or so, he had two good years his first years in the league, so we felt that he had the best opportunity to come in and help us this year."

The 5-foot-11 Avery was a second-round pick in 2008 out of Houston by St. Louis. He had 100 catches for 1,263 yards and eight touchdowns but missed the 2010 season after tearing his right ACL against New England on Aug. 26. The Rams cut him Sept. 3.

Munchak said another benefit is that Avery can talk to Britt as the receiver works through surgery and his rehabilitation.

"The best thing to do is to talk to someone else who has been through it, and we ended up bringing in someone who has been through it," Munchak said.

But Damian Williams is likely to start Sunday at Cleveland (2-1) opposite Nate Washington. Munchak said they hope Avery can get up to speed in the next couple days before deciding if he will be active in Cleveland.
