DAVIE, Fla. -- The week began like too many others in recent years for the Miami Dolphins: with uncertainty at quarterback.

Quarterback Matt Moore's status was uncertain Monday after he left the Dolphins' loss against Philadelphia with a head injury. The initial diagnosis was a slight concussion, and Moore was to undergo further evaluation.

The Dolphins also awaited test results on Pro Bowl tackle Jake Long, who underwent an MRI exam for a back injury that knocked him out of Sunday's game.

If Moore can't play Sunday at Buffalo, J.P. Losman would start against his former teammates. Losman would be the 17th quarterback to start for Miami since Dan Marino retired.

Instability at QB is one reason the Dolphins are assured of their third consecutive losing season, the longest such streak since the 1960s.

The Dolphins were 0 for 4 converting short-yardage situations. They were stopped for no gain twice on third and 1, and twice on fourth and 1.

There were other issues. The Dolphins gave up nine sacks, tying a franchise record. Three turnovers in a span of eight Miami plays led to 17 points for the Eagles.

On Monday the Dolphins fired coach Tony Sparano.

Assistant head coach/secondary Todd Bowles will take over the team on an interim basis.

Sunday's defeat halted a recent surge by the Dolphins, who had won four of their past five games. They've been out of playoff contention since October, and now even the modest goal of finishing at .500 is beyond reach.

"It's kind of disgusting to talk about," linebacker Kevin Burnett said.

Receiver Brandon Marshall said everyone was at fault for the latest loss, coaches included.

"Comes a time where we have to prepare better as far as putting guys in position, and guys being ready when they're in that position to make a play," Marshall said. "Hopefully this week things will be a little bit different."

The game plan will depend a good deal on who's at quarterback. Losman came off the bench with Miami trailing Philadelphia 24-10, threw his first NFL completion since 2008 and finished six for 10 for 60 yards with five sacks, one for a safety.

Losman signed with the Dolphins on Oct. 25. A first-round draft choice in 2004, he started 33 games in five seasons with the Bills, throwing 33 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions. He spent part of the 2010 season with the Seattle Seahawks but didn't play.

When pressed into action on Sunday, Losman said, he was ready.

"I haven't thrown down the field in a while, so it was exciting," he said. "I prepared really hard. I know the offense, I know it well."
