Source: 49ers reject bid for Ed Donatell

San Francisco denied permission to Tampa Bay for the Buccaneers to hire the 49ers' defensive backs coach, Ed Donatell, as their defensive coordinator, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Saturday.

News of the rejection came a day after the 49ers gave general manager Trent Baalke a three-year contract extension and the Buccaneers hired former Giants quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan as their offensive coordinator.

Former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was hired by Tampa Bay in late January to replace Raheem Morris as coach, part of the Buccaneers' plans to remake their staff.

The 49ers are in a position of relative stability after going 13-3 to win the NFC West title and advancing to the NFC Championship Game.
