Wharton severely damaged his right knee on Cincinnati's first series of the preseason opener against the Jets, forcing him to leave the field on a cart.
In addition, the Bengals put cornerback Brandon Ghee (wrist), cornerback Shaun Prater (knee), receiver/cornerback Taveon Rogers (shoulder) and safety Robert Sands (chest) on the injury list Friday. None was a starter.
Cincinnati also waived defensive end Luke Black, halfback Aaron Brown, quarterback Tyler Hansen and guard Matt Murphy, leaving them with 76 players. They must get down to 75 players by Monday.
