John Fox, Jack Del Rio fined
The NFL fined Denver Broncos head coach John Fox $30,000 and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for their behavior during last Monday night's loss to Atlanta in which they publicly criticized officials.
The NFL even called the Georgia Dome at halftime of the game to get the message to Fox and Del Rio to tone down their act in the second half, a source had told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
"There's nothing much to say, other than that the league has its policy, there are procedures," Fox said of his fine. "It's kind of an in-house thing."
NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson said Monday he is reviewing incidents from Sunday night's New England-Baltimore game involving Patriots coach Bill Belichick and the Ravens' John Harbaugh. Anderson also is looking at actions by Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in their loss to Cincinnati.
Anderson says "there is a long-standing NFL rule prohibiting verbal or physical abuse of game officials."
Belichick grabbed the arm of an official as they were leaving the field after Baltimore kicked a winning field goal at the end of the game.
Fox and Del Rio were both furious at the replacement officials, especially during a chaotic first quarter that took an hour to play in front of a national audience.
After the game, Fox sidestepped whether the game's unsteady flow hurt his team.
"In this league, you have to overcome a lot of things," Fox said, "and we don't use officiating as an excuse."
The NFL reached out to the owners, general managers and coaches of all 32 teams last week to advise them that the type of on-field behavior it witnessed in Week 2 games will not be acceptable.
Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN.com's Bill Williamson and The Associated Press was used in this report.
