Redskins cut Billy Cundiff

The Washington Redskins cut Billy Cundiff on Tuesday, the second time the kicker has been released this season.

The Redskins announced they released the 32-year-old Cundiff, who had missed four of six field goal attempts the past two games, and signed former UCLA placekicker Kai Forbath.

Forbath, 25, made all five of his field goal attempts for the Buccaneers in the preseason, including two from 50 yards or more. He was waived by Tampa Bay before the season.

Forbath emerged as the winner in a tryout at Redskins Park on Tuesday. He won the Lou Groza Award with UCLA in 2009 as the top kicker in college football, but he has yet to play in a regular-season game in the NFL.

In five games this season, Cundiff made just seven of 12 field goal attempts, his 58.3 percentage last among NFL kickers. He made one of his two attempts in Washington's loss to the Falcons Sunday, the miss coming on a 31-yard try.

The Redskins have struggled for some two decades to find a long-term solution at the kicker position. Graham Gano and Neil Rackers competed for the job at this year's training camp, but coach Mike Shanahan cut both in a 24-hour period to snatch up Cundiff, who had just been waived by the Baltimore Ravens.

Cundiff's range has always been in question. He is 5 for 21 over his career from 50-plus yards, including 1 for 8 since the start of last season.

He is most remembered, however, for missing a potential game-tying, 32-yarder against the New England Patriots in the waning seconds of last season's AFC title game.
