Redskins, Bills each fined $20K

NEW YORK -- The NFL has fined the Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills $20,000 each for violating league procedures on reporting injuries.

The injuries involved Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and Bills defensive end Mario Williams.

Washington was fined for not properly updating media on Griffin's status during the Oct. 7 game against Atlanta after he left with a head injury that turned out to be a mild concussion. Coach Mike Shanahan had described Griffin as being "shaken up."

The Bills failed to list Williams on the injury report while he was being treated for a sprained left wrist. Williams said Oct. 3 that the wrist had been bothering him and was limiting his effectiveness. The league said he should have been on the injury report; he has been the past two weeks.

Quinton Coples and Aaron Maybin of the New York Jets have been fined for separate hits last weekend on Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck.

Coples, the Jets' 2012 first-round pick, was fined $10,000 for grabbing the face mask of Luck, the No. 1 overall selection, in New York's 35-9 win. Maybin was fined $7,875 for "unnecessarily" striking Luck with his elbow after blocking him during an interception return by Antonio Cromartie. The penalty wiped out Cromartie's touchdown.

Detroit defensive end Lawrence Jackson was fined $15,750 for hitting Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick below the knees in the Lions' 26-23 overtime victory. Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson was fined $10,000 for simulating shooting a gun during a touchdown celebration.

Minnesota safety Harrison Smith was fined $15,750 for a horse-collar tackle on Griffin in the Redskins' 38-26 win.
