Police report details released
Jovan Belcher sent a text message to his secret girlfriend saying he "would shoot" Kasandra Perkins, just months before he killed her and later took his own life, according to the police report obtained by the Kansas City Star.
The newspaper reported Tuesday that the late Kansas City Chiefs linebacker texted the other woman that he "would shoot" the 22-year-old mother of his 3-month-old daughter "if she didn't leave him alone." According to the police report, the secret girlfriend, also 22 years old, believed Belcher was joking.
Belcher, 25, murdered Perkins on Dec. 1, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium, where he shot himself in the head. Different guns were used to kill Perkins and himself.
Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, provided details of events leading up to the murder, according to the report. She said she had moved in with the couple two weeks before their deaths because they were having "relationship problems due to financial issues associated with Perkins' spending habits."
Shepherd also said that the argument that preceded Perkins' killing "was in regard to one or both of them going out as in to a club or partying."
Police said in the report that they found a bullet hole in the floor under Perkins' body that went through to the basement, possibly indicating that the victim was on the floor when she was shot. Shepherd said, according to police, that she heard a thump before the gunshots.
Police found 10 apparent gunshot wounds in the front of Perkins' body and five in her back. According to the report, the medical examiner found four bullets remaining in her body.At Arrowhead Stadium, Belcher was met by general manager Scott Pioli, and Belcher asked for coach Romeo Crennel and defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs. They said they never believed they were in danger, and that Belcher thanked them for all they'd done for him. As police arrived, Belcher slipped behind a car and put a gun to his head. The newspaper reported that Crennel pleaded with Belcher, yelling, "You're taking the easy way out!" before Belcher killed himself.
According to the Star, Belcher told the other woman in a text that Perkins "knew exactly how to press his buttons and make him angry." He also told the woman that Perkins "threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
