GMs recorded on prank phone call
Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik were the victims of a prank phone call by two 20-year-olds who got them together on a conference call discussing free agency.
Deadspin acquired the audio and published a transcript.
NFL Free Agency
The NFL's free-agent frenzy officially is under way, and ESPN.com will keep you updated with all the twists and turns of the signing period.
During the conversation, recorded Friday, the two GMs talk about free agents and complain about the new free-agency period, which they agree gives leverage to agents.
The most newsworthy exchange during the six-minute conversation happens when they discuss the Bills' plans for free agency. Nix says he's not planning on doing much because he's handcuffed by the money the team pays Ryan Fitzpatrick.
"We just can't afford to pay that kind of money for a guy who's fighting for probably a backup job," Nix said.
On Tuesday, the Bills released Fitzpatrick, who was due to make a $3 million bonus this week as part of a six-year, $59 million contract extension he signed in October 2011.
The Bills have referred the issue to legal counsel. When contacted by ESPN, the Bucs had no comment.
"We are aware of the report on Deadspin involving a phone conversation with Bills GM Buddy Nix," the Bills said in a statement. "We have made the league aware of the report and are reviewing it with legal counsel."
