Source: Matt Flynn on trading block
The Seahawks would be seeking draft picks for Flynn and were encouraged when the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs set the market for such trades, with Alex Smith going to Kansas City for a second-round pick this year and a conditional third-rounder that could become a second-round pick if Smith meets predetermined levels of success with his new team.
Smith has played significantly more in his career than has Flynn.
The Seahawks signed Flynn as a free agent from Green Bay before drafting Russell Wilson, who won the starting role in the preseason and led the team to the NFC divisional round. Flynn has made just two career starts and threw only nine passes last season.
Among the teams needing a quarterback are the Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals. A source said the Jaguars, coached by former Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, are not involved in pursuing Flynn.
Flynn's contract has him scheduled to make $5.25 million in base salary this season.
