RICHMOND, Va. -- Washington Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker is out another four to five months after a third surgery on his right knee.

Carriker was placed on the active physically unable to perform list Thursday, the opening day of training camp. He tore the quad tendon in his knee in the second game last season and almost certainly will sit out this season.

Carriker had 5½ sacks in 2011 and renegotiated his contract to remain with the Redskins this year. He's been replaced on the first-string unit by third-year player Jarvis Jenkins.

Also Thursday, the Redskins placed cornerback Josh Wilson on the active PUP list in the morning, then took him off the list in the afternoon after he passed his physical. Wilson has been recovering from left shoulder surgery.

Backup linebacker Kennan Robinson injured his left shoulder during practice and was scheduled for an MRI. He tore the pectoral muscle in his right shoulder last season.

Backup offensive lineman Maurice Hurt was also placed on the active PUP list. He had surgery on his right knee during the offseason.

The Redskins released safeties Jordan Bernstine and Devin Holland and signed safety Jose Gumbs and cornerback Ryan Mouton.
