Kubiak did acknowledge, however, that Reed still might play and is considered a game-time decision.
Reed practiced all week on a limited basis for the Texans. The nine-time Pro Bowler had arthroscopic hip surgery in April and was on the physically unable to perform list throughout training camp and the preseason.
Reed said he might have suffered the torn labrum in last year's AFC Championship game.
Two weeks ago, Reed received injections to help his recovery in Vail, Colo. Reed said Friday he is still working through the results of those injections.
Safety Shiloh Keo will start in place of Reed.
