TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks practiced Wednesday for the first time since he was diagnosed with a MRSA staph infection in August.

Nicks practiced on what coach Greg Schiano said was a "very limited" basis. Nicks said he had been doing some running on his own in recent days after cultures showed he no longer had the infection.

"I'm going to do everything in my power to play [Sunday]," Nicks said.

There is added incentive because the opponent is the New Orleans Saints, Nicks' former team. But Schiano and Nicks both sounded like Nicks might need more practice time before playing in a game.

"You can run sprints until you're blue in the face, but you're not going to get into football shape with anything except football," Nicks said.

Tampa Bay kicker Lawrence Tynes also was diagnosed with a MRSA infection around the same time as Nicks. He has been placed on the non-football injured reserve list.
