Lavonte David's penalty for pushing New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith out of bounds late in the fourth quarter last Sunday led to a field goal that cost his Tampa Bay Buccaneers the game. He'll have to pay a financial penalty for the hit now, as well.
The NFL fined the linebacker $7,875 for the hit on Smith, David told ESPN.com. He said he plans to appeal the fine.
The fine was earlier reported by the NFL Network.
Nick Folk kicked a 48-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining after David's personal foul following Smith's big run gave him the chance, lifting the Jets to an improbable 18-17 victory.
David said Sunday that he thought Smith was still inbounds when he hit the quarterback at the Bucs' 45. The penalty moved the ball to the 30, and Folk kicked the winner on the next play.
"I don't know what to say,'' he said Sunday. "They called a flag. I guess I hit him out of bounds. Everybody told to me to keep my head up. All the guys in here were very supportive.''
Goldson told reporters in Tampa on Wednesday that he received a "pretty significant" fine from the league for his hit on Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland.
There has been no word if Barron has been fined for his hit on Jeremy Kerley, which resulted in a concussion for the Jets receiver.
ESPN.com Buccaneers reporter Pat Yasinskas, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN.com Jets reporter Rich Cimini contributed to this report. Information from The Associated Press also was used.
