Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano did not return to Tampa with the team Sunday due to a family medical emergency in the Boston area, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Schiano's Buccaneers fell to 0-3 with Sunday's 23-3 road loss to the New England Patriots.

Schiano has come under fire this season, his second with the Buccaneers. Darrelle Revis reportedly was unhappy with Schiano's disciplined style, although the star cornerback publicly refuted those reports this past week.

Josh Freeman also reportedly was unhappy with Schiano following a report that the coach manipulated voting results to prevent the quarterback from being a team captain. Freeman, however, also has publicly defended Schiano.
