Patrick Peterson: I'm still the best CB
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson proclaimed Wednesday he was the best cornerback in the NFL and a day later, he's standing firmly by that declaration.
"Why wouldn't I?" Peterson asked.
SportsNation: NFL's top cornerback?
According to Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, Patrick Peterson is the NFL's best cornerback. Do you agree? Rank 'Em!
On Pro Football Talk's TV show Wednesday, he was asked about Cardinals coach Bruce Arians' calling him the best cornerback in the NFL after Peterson had two interceptions in the final four minutes of Sunday's 13-10 win over Tampa Bay.
The first interception led to a game-tying touchdown and the second sealed the win.
"I'm sorry, some will argue that (Tampa Bay cornerback) Darrelle (Revis) is," Arians said Sunday. "But I don't think it's even close in my opinion."
Peterson, who was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, agreed.
"It's a lot of things," Peterson said. "By me having an opportunity (to) guard the offense's No. 1 receiver week in and week out and doing my job, holding them under 100 yards, now getting interceptions, I think my skill set is different from a lot of players.
"I would never put another guy in front of me."
Peterson feels like he's matured as a cornerback since being selected fifth overall in 2011. His welcome to the NFL was marred by the lockout, limiting his opportunities to prepare before training camp that season.
But in the two years since, Peterson has displayed his progress. Last season, he began showing the league he's more than a dynamic punt returner who also played corner. He had seven interceptions and developed a reputation as a press, shutdown corner.
With two interceptions through four games in 2013, he's on pace to eclipse last year's career mark.
"I understand the position much better than I have my rookie year," he said. "I understand the game much better and I'm playing much faster."
His production on the field has led to individual success with two Pro Bowl nods in two seasons, but Peterson would gladly give up an annual trip to Hawaii for a ring.
"At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to win a championship," Peterson said. "I want to do what I need to do to help my team win a championship."
And if that's being the league's best cornerback, that's what Peterson will do.
