Manning, who was going to be worked in as the Texans' kick returner, said Monday afternoon that an MRI revealed no tears in his knee.
The Texans (2-4) are on a four-game losing streak. They placed tight end Owen Daniels on injured reserve with a designation to return last week.
"Losing OD, losing Danieal Manning, those are really go-to players," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We're going to miss him. He was starting to return [kicks] for us because we got healthy in the secondary. ... We're going to miss Danieal as a player and a person. ... Young guys have to step up and play more."
Houston also placed undrafted rookie cornerback A.J. Bouye on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
To fill the roster spots, the Texans signed cornerback Elbert Mack, who was in training camp with the team, and promoted inside linebacker Mike Mohamed from the practice squad. To fill the vacancy on the practice squad, the Texans signed cornerback Josh Victorian.
