Gary Kubiak: Case Keenum is starter
HOUSTON -- A day after benching QB Case Keenum late in the third quarter of a 28-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders, coach Gary Kubiak said Keenum will start once again when the struggling Houston Texans host the one-win Jaguars on Sunday.
"I have complete confidence in him," Kubiak said.
Keenum was pulled after leading the Texans' offense to three consecutive three-and-outs to start the third quarter. He has struggled in the second halves of each game he's started.
Kubiak replaced Keenum with Matt Schaub, who had been the Texans' starting quarterback from 2007 until Oct. 13, when he suffered an ankle and foot injury. Even after his injury healed, Schaub -- who set an NFL record by throwing interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in four consecutive games -- did not return to the starting lineup. He was replaced by Keenum, an undrafted first-year player out of the University of Houston, who spent last season on the Texans' practice squad.
Kubiak said he didn't think the benching would affect Keenum's confidence.
"I think I was really thinking of him, to be honest with you," Kubiak said. "I've been in this league a long time and dealt with a lot of quarterbacks. I'm trying to develop one right now. Right or wrong, I made that decision because of the situation I thought I was fixing to put a young player in, from my standpoint of what I was doing coaching-wise. I don't have time to explain that to y'all."
Schaub completed 12 of 25 passes for 155 yards and could not lead the Texans to a touchdown that would have given them the lead late in the fourth quarter.
"I'd do it again because of why I did it," Kubiak said of his quarterback shuffle. "&I didn't want to put a young guy in a bad situation."
The Texans are mired in an eight-game losing streak. Keenum has started four of them.
