The Texans are sticking with Ryan Mallett as their starting quarterback. Coach Bill O'Brien said given the short week it was especially important to have consistency at the position. "He knows he has to play better," O'Brien said. "He's gotta do a better job of throwing the ball more accurately, he's gotta be more controlled in the pocket. Don't turn it over. Get us into the right play."

Freeman, Hoyer get game balls in Falcons' 48-21 win over Texans (1:47)

Texans receiver Cecil Shorts was on the ground when a Falcons defensive lineman drove him into the turf. "It's football; I ain't going to say it was a dirty play," Shorts said. "(The injury) didn't happen until the last guy jumped on top of me. It wasn't needed, but it's football." Shorts suffered a significant injury to his left shoulder. It happened on the game's final play.


J.J. Watt: Texans play in rout was 'pitiful'

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year, who had a sack and three tackles for loss on Sunday, wasn't pleased with his team in a 48-21 loss to Atlanta that dropped Houston to 1-3.

Derek Newton said he got turned around on Arian Foster's fumble. "I was getting ready to turn back around," Newton said. "He was right there and I hit him somehow. Turned into a real bad play."

Falcons firing on all cylinders (2:26)

Arian Foster said he was not 100 percent but came out of the game fine. Foster laughed at a question about ball security with a "next question." He later said his fumble was his fault, not right tackle Derek Newton's fault. Newton's arm seemed to knock the ball from Foster's grasp. "I didn't play well," Foster said.

Freeman's big day powers Falcons (1:19)

Texans coach Bill O'Brien answered a string of questions by saying he's got to do a better job being a head coach. Declined to offer any specific thoughts about the 48-21 loss.

Hoyer in for Mallett as Texans crushed by Falcons

Down 42-0, the Houston Texans turned their quarterback carousel one more time, giving the reins back to Brian Hoyer, who began the season as their starter.

The Texans have turned over the ball three times -- an Arian Foster fumble, a CJ Fiedorowicz fumble and a Ryan Mallett interception. They've also given up two touchdowns to Falcons running back Devonta Freeman.
