Pats boast two top red zone weapons

Tom Brady might not be the league's best red zone QB, but he's pretty good. Meanwhile, Rob Gronkowski is virtually unstoppable inside the 20. Bill Barnwell breaks it down. Red zone analysis

Mike Reiss ESPN New England Patriots reporter

Patriots TE Martellus Bennett was asked if it's challenging to develop chemistry with two new quarterbacks. Quick with humor, Bennett replied, "I've dated two girls at the same time before."

On QB reps at Patriots' second training camp practice Friday, Bill Belichick flipped the routine from Day 1 as Jimmy Garoppolo took the top reps in 7-on-7 passing drills while Tom Brady was first in 11-on-11. Each received the same number of overall reps in those drills -- 17 total.

Patriots fans at training camp just saw a glimpse of the intensity with which Tom Brady practices. After a pass intended for WR Malcolm Mitchell in 7-on-7 passing drills was swatted away by a staffer with a paddle, Brady ripped his helmet off with two hands and spiked it into the ground as the ear pads in the helmet popped out.

Belichick scolds reporter after baffling QB question (0:21)

Mike Reiss ESPN New England Patriots reporter

Two days after laying out his quarterback plan, Patriots coach Bill Belichick scoffed at a question Friday morning about whether Jimmy Garoppolo could remain the starter upon Tom Brady's return from a four-game suspension. "Jesus Christ," Belichick said softly, clearly annoyed at the question. The topic was initially broached by a reporter asking Belichick if he had ever been part of a situation where in July he named a starter for the fifth week of the season.

Temperatures in the mid-70s with rain in the forecast for Friday's second Patriots training camp practice. Team generally likes to practice in elements but in the event plans change and they go inside, the practice would be closed to the public. Team updates its hotline at 508-549-0001 with latest practice plan.

Patriots strong enough at running back?

New England didn't pick up a running back in the draft, and while its backs were solid at pass-catching in 2015, a dominant (and healthy) leader at the position has yet to stand out ahead of the upcoming season. Under-the-radar storylines

Can another team win the AFC East?

In Bill Belichick's 16 years in charge, the Patriots have failed to win the AFC East just three times, including 2008, when Tom Brady tore his ACL in Week 1. Perhaps Brady's suspension this year will crack the door further open.

Asked if Rex Ryan "lost his team" last season, current Patriots and former Bills WR Chris Hogan tells WEEI, "He didn't lose the team, ever. It was a grind the entire time we were there. There's a lot of good players over there, and it's just a matter of everyone meshing as one over there. If they get that together, they'll be a good team."
