Rankins leads the way for 'hog mollies'

The Saints' first-round selection of Sheldon Rankins started a run of "hog mollies," or "big dudes," as 21 defensive tackles were taken in the first five rounds. Ten draft takeaways

GM Mickey Loomis admitted the Saints came close to running out of time before they turned in their fourth-round pick of DT David Onyemata. "We didn't pass. It was close, though," Loomis said. "That was a product of the trade and getting the OK and getting the kid's name spelled right. ... There's a lot of vowels in this kid's name."

GM Mickey Loomis said he reminded everyone in his pre-draft press conference that he tends to favor moving up and going to get a guy the Saints want -- which they did twice in this year's draft. He said they looked for possibilities to move down but didn't materialize.

New Saints RB Daniel Lasco's final year at Cal was hampered by injuries. But he dominated the scouting combine. His broad jump of 11 feet, 3 inches was an all-time record for RBs at the combine. And his vertical leap of 41.5 inches was tied with DB Jalen Ramsey for the best among any player at any position this year.

The Saints added a diminutive, shifty weapon in Round 7, taking the Cal running back. Check out some of Lasco's best highlights.

Saints end their draft with California RB Daniel Lasco in Round 7. I had running back rated dead last among their needs this year, but Round 7 is all about upside and potential. And ESPN/Scouts Inc. had Lasco rated in the top 200, so the value seems solid for the 6-foot, 209-pounder.

Saints are back on the clock at No. 237. I would have mentioned two of their LSU neighbors (DB Jalen Mills and OL Vadal Alexander) as intriguing options, but they finally just went in the last few picks. Arizona LB Scooby Wright is an intriguing option who has fallen.

Saints coach Sean Payton tells NFL Network that new DT David Onyemata is a "self-made guy" and, "I love the kid's makeup." Said the Saints initially envision him inside at DT in the sub rush but also think he can play some DE in base defense.

New Saints DT David Onyemata's college coach from Manitoba, Brian Dobie, said they call him "Cinderella" in Canada. The Nigerian-born player had never even held a football until he was in Dobie's office looking to try out for the football team in 2011. ... Said Onyemata's pro day, which drew 17 NFL teams, was probably the biggest in the history of Canada and him being drafted is "national news."

The Saints traded up in Round 4 to grab the Manitoba product. Check out some of Onyemata's best highlights.

Saints' new DT David Onyemata is from Nigeria and never played football until he moved to Canada in 2011. Said he tried out for the team later that year because he wanted something to do in his free time -- then fell in love with the game.

Here are the Saints' picks so far through the fourth round: 1. Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville; 2a. Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State. 2b. Vonn Bell, S, Ohio State. 4. David Onyemata, DT, Manitoba.

The Saints traded this year's fifth-round pick plus next year's fifth-rounder to Washington to move up and draft Manitoba DT David Onyemata in the fourth round. Now have just one pick left in Round 7.

Saints move up into fourth round to take Manitoba DT David Onyemata – a surprising move and a surprising choice. ESPN/Scouts Inc. has him rated No. 251 overall. But analyst Todd McShay likes his upside. A 6-3, 300-power player with the potential to play DT or DE. As ESPN's Trey Wingo said, the "Canada to Saints" pipeline continues after they drafted Akiem Hicks from a Canadian college in 2012.

Saints back on the clock after trading up with Redskins. Still need a guard, defensive end. Wild-card possibility is quarterback.

Thumbs up or down: Michael Thomas

The Saints took a break from their defensive reconstruction to add Thomas in Round 2. Was it the right move? Mike Triplett answers

Great story from Sean Payton and Vonn Bell on how the Ohio State safety came through for his new boss. The Saints were missing times on some of Bell's drills, so Payton called Bell personally to ask for video of them. Bell passed the test when Payton's text messages were flooded with the videos within a couple days. "That was important to me," Payton said. "I told him after we drafted him, I said, ‘Had you not sent me back those videos, you'd still be sitting home eating nachos right now."
