Do you buy Ryan's comments blasting Saints? (1:23)

Mike Triplett ESPN Staff Writer

Saints rookie WR Michael Thomas asked what it's like to be out there catching passes from Drew Brees: "Man, words can't really explain it. Whenever he's back there and he's throwing the ball, I'm making sure I catch it and I have my hands up and ready. ... He's a legend in my household. A lot of respect for him and the way he plays the game and the way he handles himself off the field."

Brees' contract stands out among QBs

Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan each will cost their teams a pretty penny against the cap this season. But Drew Brees' $30 million cap hit far outpaces the QB market.

Rob Ryan rips Saints, blames scheme for firing

Rob Ryan blasted his former employer, the Saints, during a recent interview with The MMQB, saying that New Orleans' defense struggled during the last two years because of schematic changes.

Can the Saints ever corral their cap?

New Orleans has had no problem mortgaging future cap space for more flexibility in the present. Eventually, that has to change. Perhaps the process can start with Drew Brees' extension. Upcoming decisions (Insider)

Sean Payton said Drew Brees compartmentalizes "extremely well," so he's not worried about his lingering contract talks being a distraction. "He's someone that's extremely focused. He's been sharp here these three days," Payton said. "I would say it's been a strength of his just with regards to playing, the ability to focus whatever situation we're in. And certainly this is no different."

On a positive injury note, Saints coach Sean Payton said RB C.J. Spiller's "health and movement skills look noticeably different" after his 2015 season was hampered by a summer knee injury. "He worked his butt off in the offseason to get that strength back in that ... knee," Payton said. "That's been real encouraging."

Two interesting alignment notes from Saints practice Thursday: LBs Stephone Anthony, James Laurinaitis took turns working with the 1s in nickel packages (only two LBs on the field). And second-year pro Kaleb Eulls has moved from DT to offensive guard -- a move that Sean Payton said they planned even before the draft.

Saints' Andrus Peat worked with the starters at RG during Thursday's OTA. Sean Payton said he'll take snaps at both RG and RT. Payton envisions Peat as a starter, with the specific position to be determined.

Saints just wrapped the first OTA practice that was open to the media. S Jairus Byrd, WR Brandin Cooks did not practice, instead working off to the side with trainers. Sean Payton declined to get into many injury specifics but said Byrd is rehabbing the same knee that bothered him the last two years and is on schedule to be back before training camp. ... Unfortunate for Byrd, who seemed on track for his first fully healthy offseason in New Orleans, but still ample time to get back to 100 percent.

Drew Brees said he'd love to get a contract extension done this offseason. But whether he's playing under a five-year deal or a one-year deal, his mindset won't change one bit.

Drew Brees hit a few out -- while hitting lefty -- but couldn't hang with Saints long snapper Justin Drescher, who crushed the home run derby at Tim Lelito's charity softball game.

Did the Saints do enough on defense?

Our panel isn't convinced. Mickey Loomis & Co. added some nice pieces, but there are still a lot of holes to fill. Offseason grades (Insider)
