Jets sure could use Ryan Fitzpatrick

In his 16 starts for the team last season, Fitzpatrick had nearly as many wins and four more touchdowns than the three QBs currently on New York's roster have in their combined 29 career starts.

While it's true the Jets are offering QB Ryan Fitzpatrick a total of $12M in the first year, which sounds like a fair deal, it's the second- and third-year proposals that his camp deems unacceptable. The combined total for 2017 and 2018 is believed to be about $12M, which would make it three years for roughly $24M.

Fitzpatrick talks hung up over back end of offer

The offer the Jets have on the table for Ryan Fitzpatrick includes $12 million in the first year, but the payouts in the second and third years are reportedly a problem in the quarterback's eyes.

The Jets' multi-year offer to free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, which has been on the table for at least two months, includes $12 million in the first year, a league source confirmed. (First reported by the NY Post.) Previously, the first-year payout was widely reported as about $8 million. ESPN reported in mid-April that the offer was higher than $8 million, and now that has been confirmed with a dollar amount.

Yates: Jets must focus on future at QB

Ryan Fitzpatrick might very well be Gang Green's starter this year, but even if he re-signs, Field Yates thinks securing a long-term solution should be priority No. 1 for the Jets. Upcoming decisions (Insider)

Discussing QB Christian Hackenberg, Jets OC Chan Gailey said every quarterback he's ever coached has needed to improve his fundamentals. Well, there were two exceptions -- Troy Aikman and John Elway. "They were two pretty good ones," Gailey said.

Geno Smith wants to make most of Jets chance

Though the Jets hope QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is back in time for training camp, Geno Smith says he wants to make the most of the opportunity he has with the team.

Jets coach Todd Bowles couldn't give a definitive answer on whether Darrelle Revis (wrist surgery) will be ready for training camp. "I can't completely answer that, but I hope he will," Bowles said. Revis, sitting out OTAs, had surgery in March.

Jets still have offseason work to do

The Jets still don't know who their quarterback will be in 2016, but perhaps Mike Maccagnan deserves credit for holding his ground. Our panel was split on the team's grade. Offseason grades (Insider)

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he's "hopeful" that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will be signed by training camp. But he wouldn't go so far as to say he's confident. He said he doesn't ask GM Mike Maccagnan for updates on the negotiations. "Just tell me when it's done," Bowles said.

Jets QB Geno Smith, commenting for the first time since the end of the season, got testy with a reporter when asked if he wants Ryan Fitzpatrick to re-sign. "That's up to the front office and Ryan Fitzpatrick," Smith said. "Why would I speak on that?" Smith cut off the reporter's follow-up questions. Otherwise, he handled the interrogation well, saying he sees Fitzpatrick's absence as "an opportunity." Smith believes he has improved considerably from his days as an erratic starter.

Jets TE Jace Amaro says he has something to prove after missing last season with a shoulder injury. He says the entire tight-end group has something to prove after catching only eight balls season. Amaro says he expects to be invoked in the passing attack.
