RICHMOND, Virginia -- The Redskins placed five players on the physically unable to perform list: receiver Josh Doctson, linebacker Perry Riley, guard Shawn Lauvao, receiver Reggie Diggs and tight end Derek Carrier.

RICHMOND, Virginia -- The Redskins signed two receivers Wednesday, Kendal Thompson and T.J. Thorpe. Thompson played quarterback in college – he spent three years at Oklahoma before transferring to Utah to play the same position. But Thompson only played a combined 13 games. He moved to receiver in the offseason in preparation for the NFL. Thorpe played receiver at North Carolina before transferring to Virginia, where he broke his clavicle.

The Redskins still aren't finished with their physicals but coach Jay Gruden said he does not expect guard Shawn Lauvao to be ready for the start of camp. Gruden said he hopes Lauvao returns by the end of training camp. Lauvao missed the last 13 games in 2015 with a foot injury and endured multiple surgeries on both feet since October.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said they want to keep former linebacker Trent Murphy as a defensive end. Murphy moved there from outside linebacker in the offseason but the Redskins need help there with the loss of Junior Galette. However, Murphy gained at least 20 pounds this offseason and would need to lose most of it to go back full time. That would be asking quite a bit.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said it was tough to see what happened to linebacker Junior Galette. "Devastated is a good word for him," Gruden said. "But for the team we have to rebound." He pointed out needing to see the young guys, including Lynden Trail.

Kirk Cousins got one helluva raise

Why is Cousins so happy? Well, you would be too if your salary went up by 2,923 percent (not a typo) from one year to the next. Top stats to know

The Redskins will undergo physicals today, which will help determine what rookie receiver Josh Doctson can do. I've heard different things on his possible availability and how much he might do early in camp. Doctson missed all of spring workouts with a tweaked Achilles.

The Redskins report to training camp in Richmond today. Coach Jay Gruden will hold a press conference at 3 p.m., but players won't be available until after Thursday morning's walk-through. A big topic for Gruden today: overcoming the loss of outside linebacker Junior Galette for a second consecutive season. Galette tore his right Achilles earlier this week and is out for the season.

Road won't get any easier in Washington

Kirk Cousins & Co. rode a hot streak to the playoffs last season, but it will be tougher in 2016. As Bill Barnwell notes, Washington's schedule will be much more difficult than last year's. Bounce-back teams

Sources: Redskins discuss Hardy internally

The Redskins have had internal discussions about replacing linebacker Junior Galette, even considering Greg Hardy, sources told ESPN.

Free agent linebacker/defensive end Dwight Freeney is not an option for the Redskins, a source said. With Junior Galette lost again for the season after tearing his right Achilles Sunday the Redskins could use more rush help. But they won't turn to the 36-year old Freeney, who had nine sacks with Arizona last season.

The Redskins also waived safety Kyshoen Jarrett after he failed a physical. Jarrett suffered nerve damage in his arm during the 2015 regular season finale. The Redskins did not anticipate his return this season; Jarrett did not participate in offseason practices. He was a key contributor as a backup safety/slot corner and special teams player as a rookie.
