George feels good in Schottenheimer's offense

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Here are five quick observations from the Redskins' training camp.

Camp Classic Moment
The Redskins used Carlisle, Pa., as their summer home from 1963 through 1994. Returning to the Dickinson College campus brought back memories.

A half block from the football field still stands Massey's ice cream place. Each day, Charley Casserly, the former Redskins general manager who started as an aide to George Allen, had to run to Massey's and get Allen his ice cream. Though he wasn't paid much, Casserly had to dig in his pocket to pay for the ice cream.

Former coach Joe Gibbs wouldn't be happy that a house with a wooden deck still overlooks the practice field. This place is for football, and nobody should party on the deck when serious work was in progress.

1. Quarterback Jeff George is a trim 212 pounds, his lightest weight since college. He says he's comfortable with coach Marty Schottenheimer's offense, which features more running plays than passing. One thing is evident from the passing: George still has one of the best arms in football.

2. Linebacker LaVar Arrington looks trimmer and, if you believe it, quicker. On one play, he chased a halfback 30 yards downfield on a pass play and slammed him to the ground after the incompletion. Arrington is a playmaker with a nasty streak. Watch out, NFL.

3. Though he is limited by a leg injury, left tackle Chris Samuels is 40 pounds lighter than last year, weighing in the 290s. Samuels played exceptionally as a rookie in the 330s, but he felt he wanted to improve his quickness. Is that possible?

4. Sixth-round choice Mario Monds looked particularly dominating in the Oklahoma drills. Schottenheimer said he looked like Joe Greene, only 50 pounds heavier. Monds is a 6-foot-3, 325-pound defensive tackle from Cincinnati.

5. As much as the Redskins might miss Deion Sanders, cornerback Champ Bailey continues to look silky smooth in shadowing receivers downfield. Several times, the offense tried to test him on deep passes. Forget about it.
