Chamberlain could stand tall at tight end

By John Clayton

MANKATO, Minn. -- Here are five quick observations from the Vikings' training camp.

Camp Classic Moment
Sometimes, no one could figure whether Keith Millard was joking or angry. One day in Mankato, players went on the field and could hear a loud disagreement between the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle and their defensive coordinator Floyd Peters.

The argument started in the team's dormitory. Somehow, the argument got to the top floor of the building. From a distance, players could see Millard and Peters going at it. The next thing they saw was Millard throw a body over the roof onto the pavement. They were shocked. Did Millard toss their defensive coordinator? Turns out, Millard made up a stuffed fake body and had Peters in on the joke. They laughed.

1. The Vikings may have a candidate for the Pro Bowl at tight end. Byron Chamberlain, signed from the Broncos, is well-coached in running routes and has a great ability in catching the ball. With the NFC in transition at tight end, Chamberlain could go to the Pro Bowl with a 50-catch season.

2. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper continues to look better and better behind center. His deep passes are a thing of beauty. He's more accurate on the short stuff. Given protection, Culpepper should stay at a Pro Bowl level for a long time.

3. The biggest worry for the Vikings on the offensive line is depth. They lack experience and playing time among any of the backups. Signing a veteran is essential because if the Vikings lose one more starting offensive lineman, their offense will be in trouble.

4. Dennis Green and his staff have great eyes for talent. Center Matt Birk, a virtual unknown two years ago, has emerged as one of the best centers in football. His technique plus big body give him an ability to dominate in the middle of the line.

5. Though it was hard to see during their second padded practice in a week, the Vikings say they will do better than expected with running backs Doug Chapman and rookie Michael Bennett. Chapman is a good, solid back. Bennett has explosive speed. Still, retired Robert Smith had all of those abilities -- and more -- in one body.
