The Miami Dolphins will start rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill in Friday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
Tannehill got the nod over Matt Moore, who started last week's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The eighth overall pick out of Texas A&M, Tannehill was impressive when he entered against the Buccaneers, completing 14 of 21 passes for 167 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown to tight end Charles Clay in the third quarter for Miami's only score in a 20-7 loss. Moore was 7-for-12 for 79 yards, and threw one interception.

First-year coach Joe Philbin previously had indicated that Tannehill would start at some point during the preseason. Philbin also has said he would like to name his starter for the regular season before the third preseason game.
David Garrard was listed atop the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart early in training camp, but he is expected to be out for up to a month following knee surgery.
