EJ Manuel, Kevin Kolb to split snaps
PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone said Saturday that rookie EJ Manuel and veteran Kevin Kolb will split snaps at quarterback when the team holds its first training camp practice on Sunday evening.
"I think that the repetitions will be split and will be done fairly, I can promise you that," Marrone said. "We're going to get looks at both Kevin and EJ with both groups, to see how they perform."
The Bills picked Manuel with the 16th overall selection in April's draft, the first quarterback that Buffalo has chosen in the first round since J.P. Losman in 2004.
"The teams that consistently compete have a franchise quarterback," general manager Doug Whaley said Saturday. "We think EJ can be that franchise quarterback."
The Bills open their preseason against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 11, and Marrone said that no decisions have been made about who will start that game.
"We haven't really gone into detailed discussions about the preseason," he said. "Our goal as coaches is to make it fair for both players. It really relies on the players to separate themselves."
It's unclear how long the Bills will wait until awarding either quarterback the starting job. Buffalo hosts the New England Patriots on Sept. 8 to begin their regular season.
"We're excited to see [Manuel] grow, and we're excited to see him compete with Kevin Kolb," Whaley said. "May the best man win.
