Gary Byrd

OT | (6-4, 308, 5.3) | Clemson
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Played one game in 1998. Suffered a tear in his shoulder, had surgery and redshirted while also trying to get his weight down from about 340. Backup in '99. Started four games, including the last three, in 2000. Started 10 games at left and right tackle in '01, including the Humanitarian Bowl. Started every game at left tackle last fall.

Positives: Big, thick, powerful blocker with long arms. Muscle-and-maul type who understands blocking angles and position and knows how to use his size. Generally gets the job done and is more efficient than pretty. Could be meaner but plays hard and competes well.

Negatives: Lacks a left tackle's quickness and feet. More of a waist-bender than a knee-bender. Will duck his head at times. Falls off too many blocks and does not sustain as well as scouts would like.

Summary: Has a good chance to play at the next level but may be better-suited to play right tackle or guard there.
