Was Bowman considered for Hawks post?

In the wake of Thursday's Denis Savard firing (the worst part of my job is calling a guy like that at home on a day like this), I thought to myself: Here's an organization that employs the greatest coach of all time in Scotty Bowman.

Why not give him the gig?

"No, no, my coaching days ended six years ago," Bowman, a senior adviser of hockey operations for the Hawks, told me.

In fact, Bowman said he made it clear to the Hawks when he came over in August 2007 that coaching wouldn't be an option.

But what about Team Canada for 2010? After all, Steve Yzerman is expected to soon be announced as the boss for the Canadian Olympic team.

"No, no, I was maybe in the running many, many years ago, but they've got so many coaches in the NHL now, they've got lots to choose from," Bowman said. "It's going to be a tough selection."

To me, the choices are Mike Babcock (Detroit), Wayne Gretzky (Phoenix), Ken Hitchcock (Columbus), Tom Renney (N.Y. Rangers), Guy Carbonneau (Montreal) and Lindy Ruff (Buffalo).
