Who's knockin' again for Mats Sundin? The Montreal Canadiens
The free-agent star met with Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey in Los Angeles yesterday, a source told ESPN.com Thursday.
Gainey's renewed interest -- he tried to sign Sundin in late June and early July -- is somewhat surprising given that he declared in September he was no longer interested in Sundin after trading for Robert Lang. Then again, Lang has essentially been a third-line center and the Canadiens have struggled of late.
Sundin has also spoken with Vancouver, Anaheim, the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay; he spoke with Lightning owner Oren Koules last week.
It's believed 10-11 teams have interest in Sundin, a list that also includes Philadelphia, Ottawa, Chicago, the New York Islanders and his old team, Toronto. His camp would like to reduce that list to 3-4 serious bidders by the end of the month.
Sundin is working out in L.A. and is eyeing a mid-to-late December return.
