Committee plans to discuss hits to the head, 'staged fighting' issues
LAS VEGAS -- Just a quick note on something we were told last night.
The NHL's competition committee will meet next Thursday in Montreal on the eve of the entry draft. NHL Players' Association executive Glenn Healy said today there may be up to "15 items" on the meeting's agenda.
The committee will also have a new face for at least one meeting: Veteran New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello will step in for Kevin Lowe as a fill-in. Lowe needed to step down after being promoted to president of the Edmonton Oilers last summer.
Four GMs and one owner, Philadelphia's Ed Snider, make up the league portion of the committee. Lamoriello is not a full-time addition at this point. The league will reassess its committee membership this summer.
The group will vote on the GMs' proposed rule change on "staged fights," which came out of last March's GMs meetings in Naples. It requires seven votes from the 10 members to pass.
The players, we are told, will also reintroduce the hits-to-the-head issue. There will be other issues on the agenda as well.
