ATLANTA -- Atlanta Thrashers center Patrik Stefan underwent surgery to repair a broken jaw on Monday and will be sidelined from four-to-six weeks. Stefan had a plate and six screws inserted into his jaw by Dr. Glen Maron and Dr. Robert Hunt at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. The first overall pick in the 1999 draft, Stefan had 10 goals and 21 assists last season. Nine minutes into the third period of Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Bruins, Stefan reached for a loose puck and the blade of Guerin's stick made contact with Stefan's face, causing a facial fracture that required surgery. Guerin drew a three-game suspension for the penalty on Monday. The Thrashers also announced that right wing Ilya Kovalchuk, the top overall pick in the 2001 draft, did not practice Monday after having nine teeth pulled on Sunday. He reported to the camp with the existing condition which was not the result of a hockey-related injury. The Thrashers assigned right wing Brad Tapper to Chicago of the American Hockey League. |
