Stars' center won't skate 'til next week

DALLAS -- Dallas Stars center Mike Modano doesn't expect to
skate again until at least next week because of a groin injury.

Modano had already missed two games before the Stars played
Atlanta on Thursday night.

"It's pretty much the same. It's just kind of stagnant,"
Modano said Thursday after sitting out the morning skate. "It's
not really moving. Nothing's really improving. You hope each day it
gets a little better. It's tough to say it's going to jump 20 to 30
percent in one day."

Modano said he hopes to skate again Monday. He left in the third
period of Friday's 6-0 loss to Phoenix.

He probably will miss Saturday's game against Colorado, the last
game before a five-game road trip, the Stars' longest of the

Coach Dave Tippett said the team is taking a cautious approach.

"When he feels like he's good enough to start skating, we'll go
from there," Tippett said. "We'll definitely be careful with it.
Hopefully when we get the green light on it, we move forward and
don't worry about any future ramifications from it."

Modano has eight goals and 17 assists through 40 games, and his
minus-19 rating is a career worst. But after a slow start, he had
points in six of seven games before getting hurt.

"Things were coming around and then this happens," Modano
said. "It's a little bit frustrating."
