Ricci has third-year option at $2M

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Free-agent center Mike Ricci signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday.

The 32-year-old Ricci was the captain of the San Jose Sharks last season, with seven goals and 19 assists in 71 games.

"There are many superlatives that you can use to describe Mike
Ricci, but the most widely held is that of competitor," general
manager Michael Barnett said. "He lays it on the line, every
shift, every night."

Ricci's deal is worth $3.5 million, with a third-year option at
$2 million, Canadian Press reported. Ricci made $3 million last

Ricci spent the last seven seasons with the Sharks after stints
with Colorado, Quebec and Philadelphia. He played his 1,000th NHL
game in February.

He said he looks forward to joining his new club.

"The Coyotes have a great nucleus of young, talented players," Ricci said.
