Training camp set for August

TORONTO -- Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic headline a list of 36 players invited to a training camp for Canada's hockey team for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Four goaltenders, 12 defensemen and 20 forwards are to attend a training camp and orientation session Aug. 15-20 in Vancouver and Kelowna, British Columbia.

The final makeup of Canada's team will depend on whether the NHL agrees to participate at the Olympics in February.

The list includes 26 players from the team that won the World Cup of Hockey last September, 19 from the team that won silver at the IIHF world championship in May and 14 from Canada's gold medal team at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

"We are very pleased with the depth we have in our country," executive director Wayne Gretzky said in a statement. "And there are players outside this group of 36 that we will continue to evaluate as we get closer to the Olympics in February before any final decisions are made."
