Check earns Gauthier two-game suspension

TORONTO -- Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Denis Gauthier was
suspended for two games without pay Monday for his check from
behind on Toronto's Kyle Wellwood.

He will miss games Tuesday against Pittsburgh and Thursday at New Jersey. He will be eligible to return Saturday against the New York Rangers.

The suspension will cost him more than $13,600, with the money
going to the players' emergency assistance fund.

The check came 22 seconds into the second period during a 5-2
win by the visiting Maple Leafs on Saturday. Gauthier received a
major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.

At practice Monday, Wellwood had a line of stitches over his discolored right eye.

"I've had a bunch of black eyes before, so it's no big deal," he said.
