Penner Beats The Clock And Kings Eliminate Blues
From Elias: Dustin Penner broke a 1-1 tie with a two-tenths of a second remaining in the second period and the Kings protected that narrowest of margins the rest of the way in securing a 2-1 victory and eliminating the Blues in six games of their first-round series. All six games in the series were decided by exactly one goal, marking only the second such series of six-or-more games in NHL playoff history. The other was the Capitals' seven-game win over the Bruins in the first round of last year's playoffs. The Kings won all three games played in Los Angeles during the series; in fact, NHL teams are 27-14 (.659) when playing on home ice during the current playoffs. That's news in a league in which, during last year's playoffs, the leaguewide home-ice winning percentage was a mere .453 (39 wins, 47 losses). In fact, through games of Friday night, this year's playoff winning percentage for NHL home teams was substantially higher than was this year's playoff winning percentage for NBA home teams (.600, with a won-lost record of 33-22). The last year in which the NHL's playoff home-ice winning percentage finished as high as .600 was 1993, when home teams went 52-33 (.612).
