After that feat, he and the Blackhawks could not come to an agreement to extend his tenure with the team, so they went to arbitration. When Niemi's value was determined to be $2.75 million, the Hawks walked away, signing Marty Turco instead. It all worked out OK, but only because Corey Crawford turned out to be a stud. Niemi headed to the West Coast, signing a one-year pact with the San Jose Sharks, who already counted countryman (and fellow netminder) Antero Niittymaki as an offseason addition. Though Niemi won his first game for the aquatic predators, he struggled through October and November before finally turning things around as the weather got chillier. In fact, if we take his nine starts in the season's first two months out of the mix, Niemi posted a 2.13 GAA and a .927 SV% (his actual figures were 2.38 and .920, respectively). This is not to say that he'll put up those adjusted figures throughout the 2011-12 season; but it is safe to say his adjustment period seems to be over. The Sharks made some key defensive additions this offseason as well -- Brent Burns and Colin White -- and this certainly won't hurt his stock. A borderline elite option.","seasonId":2012,"date":"Fri Sep 9"},"playerRater30DAY":9.1,"playerRater15DAY":11.3,"positionRank":15}
