Training camp is finally behind us. The injury reports have been tabulated, rookies sent back to juniors or hanging on to hotel rooms for at least seven or eight games while their NHL future is determined. Across the board there is at least cautious optimism that maybe the 23 players ready to line up for the start of the season have what it takes. That optimism will fade soon enough in many places and burn brighter in others with the start of the 2014-15 season on Wednesday. From that moment on the Power Rankings will enjoy a life of their own. Until then, a witches' brew of past history, offseason changes and crystal ball gazing to come up with the first rankings of the season.
