Dunham makes 35 stops for Predators

3/26/2002

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Nashville Predators feel good once
they reach overtime. Mike Dunham was the reason they got there.

Dunham made 35 saves as the Predators tied the Detroit Red Wings
3-3 Monday night.

"We can thank Mike Dunham for the whole game," Nashville
forward Vladimir Orszagh said. "He kept us in the game for the
first two periods, making some unbelievable saves. It would have
been nice to get a win, but you have to be satisfied with the
tie."

The Predators, with their 12th tie of the season, are the only
team in the league to not lose in overtime.

"Detroit is a talented team," Dunham said. "Look at their
forwards and look at their team. They are a great puck possession
team. They are a finesse team and they are going to get their
chances.

"We withstood it, and we did not give up many rebounds. We
worked hard the whole game. There are definitely some things that
we want to work on, but we have to be proud with the way we played
in the second and third periods."

Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist for the Predators.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead at 4:46 of the first period on the power
play. Nicklas Lidstrom fired a shot off of the pads of Nashville's
Mike Dunham. Sergei Fedorov skated in alone low in the slot and put
the rebound by Dunham.

Nashville answered in the second period with a power-play goal.

Detroit's Jiri Fischer, in an attempt to clear the puck away
from the net, hit Denis Arkhipov's stick at 11:26. The deflection
went past surprised goalie Manny Legace.

The Predators made it 2-1 lead at 18:12 of the second. Hartnell
made a drop pass to Karlis Skrastins in the left circle and he beat
Legace with a wrist shot.

The lead lasted only 43 seconds, as Jason Williams skated
through the slot and put a wrist shot over the Dunham's left
shoulder.

Hartnell restored the Predators' lead at 3:57 of the third
period from the left side of the net on a pass from the right
corner by Jukka Hentunen.

Detroit tied it at 18:01 when Brendan Shanahan scored from the
left-side boards.

The Predators controlled the overtime period, but were unable to
score on three shots.

"Nashville grinds it out," Legace said. "They battle. They
never give up. You have to give a lot of credit to their coaching
staff. They are well-prepared. They just keep pounding and
pounding."
