BOSTON (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes ended their skid and put two dubious streaks behind them.
"For me, personally, I wasn't thinking about it," Weekes said.
"Each game is a new game and each day is a new day. The fans and
media worry about the streaks more than the players do because it
gives them something to talk about."
Carolina (1-2-3) hadn't won since March 12, going 0-11-5 in that
span -- dating to last season. The Hurricanes were the last NHL team
to win this season.
"I don't think we played a lot different tonight than we have
the first five games," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "We
have played well defensively and are only averaging giving up 23
shots a game and that includes three overtime games."
Staal, the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, scored on
the Hurricanes' second shot of the game. He took a feed from Jeff O'Neill and one-timed a shot past goalie Andrew Raycroft just 1:57 in.
"It was exciting to score that goal and get our first win,"
Staal said. "Any time we've been playing as well as we have and
not get any wins to show for it, it is frustrating."
Boston, fresh off a 4-1-1 road trip, had a four-game winning
streak and five-game unbeaten streak snapped. It was the Bruins'
first home loss.
"We couldn't muster the emotion level we needed out there,"
coach Mike Sullivan said. "It's hard to be effective in this
league if you don't bring the energy you have to have."
O'Neill added an insurance goal at 12:47 of the third when he converted a pass from Josef Vasicek and wristed a shot past Raycroft. Vasicek assisted on both goals.
Despite coming into the game without a victory, Weekes has
allowed only 10 goals through six games. It was his 14th NHL
shutout and first this season.
Raycroft made 30 saves for the Bruins (4-2-2) and has only
allowed six goals in four starts.
"It's tough when you give up the first goal and you're battling
behind all the time," Raycroft said.
The Hurricanes, dating to last season, are 4-17-2-2 in their
last 25 road games. They came in as the lowest scoring team in the
NHL with only seven goals.
Joe Thornton had a five game scoring streak snapped for Boston.
