DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings try to post consecutive victories for the first time in more than three weeks when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings have not won back-to-back contests since a three-game winning streak from January 2-5.

On Thursday, Detroit beat New Jersey here, 5-2, as captain Steve Yzerman picked up an assist on a power-play goal by Tomas Holmstrom to move past Mario Lemieux into sixth place on the NHL's all-time scoring list with 1,702 points. Yzerman holds the NHL record for points by a player who has spent his whole career with one team.

Defenseman Mathieu Schneider scored a power-play goal and also assisted Holmstrom's for the Red Wings, who scored on three of their first six shots.

The Hurricanes, who are opening a three-game road trip, lost to Washington on Thursday, 5-3.

Justin Williams scored twice and defenseman Bret Hedican had the other goal for Carolina, which has lost three of its last four games. Williams, who had not produced a two-goal game since October 1, 2001, has four points in six games since he was acquired from Philadelphia.

Carolina beat Detroit at home in the teams' one meeting last season, 6-4.
