Blackhawks suffer first loss to European club since '91

ZURICH -- ZSC Lions beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 Tuesday in an exhibition game to win the Victoria Cup trophy.

Lukas Grauwiler scored go-ahead goal with 5:16 to play, giving the Zurich club the trophy awarded to the New York Rangers for beating a Russian team before last season.

Chicago hadn't lost to a European club since 1991.

Defenseman Cam Barker put the Blackhawks ahead at 6:13 of the first period.

Zurich's Patrick Baertschi tied the score with 7:35 left in the first period on assists by Thibaut Monnet and Andre Signoretti.

The Blackhawks put 35 shots on Lions' 40-year-old Finnish goalie, Ari Sulander.

The Blackhawks beat Swiss club HC Davos 9-2 on Monday night. They open the NHL season Friday night against Florida in Helsinki.
